Dialogue with the Nile returns to the river with a new question. Round 2, The Nile Floating Market, invites young architects to imagine a contemporary floating market along the Cairo Nile waterfront: a public destination that brings together tourism, culture and the living spirit of the Nile.

The brief in one paragraph

Each team decides whether its market is movable — drifting or docking along the river — or permanently anchored in one place, and explains why. Every proposal must also say what the market sells. Generic souvenirs are ruled out: the theme should reflect both tourism and the Nile, from Nile-grown products and river-based crafts to water-inspired food and botanical trades.

The vision

  1. A distinctive architectural landmark that:
  2. Activates the Nile as a social and cultural interface
  3. Offers a unique tourist experience
  4. Reflects Egyptian identity through innovative floating architecture
  5. Creates a memorable night-time atmosphere with lighting, reflections and ambience

What the project may include

  • Floating or movable market stalls
  • Water-edge food and drink decks
  • Night-time activity zones: music, art, open-air cinema
  • Small courtyards, public resting spaces and a shaded walkway
  • Service pods for maintenance, utilities and waste

The design language may draw on Egyptian vernacular materials, contemporary minimalism and the sensory qualities of water, light and movement.
